Tangerine Peel Inspired
These conceptual sculptures were inspired by tangerine peels. One morning as I was peeling tangerines for my kids, I enjoyed the playfulness of these peels piling up. They were humorous and reminded me of those Rorscharch ink blot tests. I could see animals and dancers in these shapes. Their shape speaks as positive and negative space through its convex and concave shapes. Together they seemed to tell a story. This was the start of this series.
Tangerine peels, a part of nature that we consider waste. Tangerine peels contain vitamins and nutrients that are more beneficial for our health than the fruit itself. In the tree mounted installation concept, tangerine peels have been enlarged and cut out of thick, natural wool felt sheets backed by wires. Tangerine peels and wool are both materials that provide nurturing and protection. The health benefits of tangerine peels are less widely recognized than that of wool.
