The Concept
The artwork Butterfly is a landmark piece. Two butterflies welcome the public into the community. These gigantic butterflies have transformed within in a nourished, safe cocoon, represented by the rock below. The cocoon is the place, like in a veenerij, where the energy exchange of transformation happens. It is a safe, protective place. It carries the history and future success for the community. The butterflies have come out of their cocoon as beautiful, strong butterflies. They spread their wings and connect with the world.
From another glance the butterflies land on the rocks, they have returned home from their adventures. They are grateful to be home here. The public is inspired to stay and explore the concept of being home. Butterflies share the feeling of change, hope and life.
The butterflies are free to come and go. Our imagination soars on their adventures. They are in the action of landing and taking off. We are invited to spread our own wings and flutter through the large openings of the building at the Parkrand Flat. We imagine pollinating the flowers on the balconies and playing around the hanging chandeliers. We imagine flying through the neighborhood and the surrounding communities. We believe that we already have wings and have the courage to fly. We are home and we are grateful to come back at the end of each day.
The public is invited to interact with Butterfly. The rock base invites the public to approach and interact with it. Children can climb the rock and climb through the lower two openings of the large butterfly.
The open design of this sculpture invites a fun play of shadow on the ground. As the light changes through the day, the shadows on the ground create fun effects. They cast a decorative shadow onto the grown below. Our imagination connects with them.
