“I used to dream of flying as if I were swimming.” It turns out that swimming is the basis of flying. Kinda makes sense. A curiosity is sparked. Fish swim through trees.
The duality of air and water mirrors each other. We are invited to experience what it’s like to walk through this underwater world without an additional breathing device. We can reflect on reality, evolution, time and place as fins transform to wings.
Flying Fish was sparked through collage sketches. I loved the feeling of an underwater forest. Fascinating. The metaphor of the forest being a sea of subconscious holds the mysteries that I feel among the trees. I am fascinated how the subconscious plays in daily life. Inspiration emerges to the surface.
In my art, I play with perceiving the world. Other realities become visible. In my process, memories are brought up to the surface. As an art therapist, in my past life, this world is mysterious and holds answers that appear when we are ready to accept them.
PROJECT FORM:
The overall shape of Flying Fish is semi-figurative. They resemble a school of fish swimming through the trees. Both the positive and negative spaces depict fish forms.
The forms have tribal connotations that simply emerged as I made life size charcoal sketches in my Amsterdam studio. I was tuned into the Sculpture Forest and let my body create the forms.
The sculpture is made out of treated aluminum and coated with a high gloss powdercoat. This gloss mirrors the forest with the sense of water movement. The forest is transformed into an underwater scene. The trees are kelp and algae growing vertically. Fish swim around the trees.
